We just release version 1.1.1 of Plaphoons for Android:

Now you can use the .pla files that have been created with the desktop version of Plaphoons. Either enter the filename by hand or use OI Filemanager (https://market.android.com/details?id=org.openintents.filemanager).

Known issues:
- after using OI Filemanager, another choose file dialogue pops up

First, Plaphoons for Android did not win a prize of the Vodafone Smart Accessibility Award, but Help Talk did. Enough said about that.

Second and more important, the source code has been made available at github just right now - under GPL. Please see and checkout from https://github.com/openintents/plaphoons-for-android
The code contains a sample tableau but also contains the possiblity to read .pla files from the sdcard. In the next weeks, we will improve the usablity for choosing the tableau.

Plaphoons for Android

It contains a pre-installed set of symbols for French language. Therefore, the text-to-speech configuration has to be switch to french! Ideally a better TTS-engine and voice should be installed.

The sets of symbols are defined in the same format as the Plaphoons tool. The Plaphoons tool can be used on a PC to design the set of symbols. The user just have to upload these files onto the tablet. It is planned to enable the upload and management of the set of symbols through a web platform.

Introduction and First Version

We would like to introduce our first version of the talker app for Android tablets. The talker apps helps people with speech disorder to communicate in basic sentences. It allows users to tap on a pictogram on their tablet and let the tablet speak out the associated word.
There are plenty of different free and commercial version for the desktop but I could not find anything for Android tablets.

The app is based on the Plaphoons application for PCs that was developed by the Fressa project. The Android application is based on the Java version of Plaphoons and optimized for tablets.

For the first version, we would like to add automatic import of the Plaphoons tableaus. While the text-to-speech information are easily imported the image formats of the pictograms have to be compatible with the used tablet.

As the current version contains personal pictures the source code is not yet published. Please stay tuned and contact us if you would like to hear more.
